for Charlotte Nightclub
The Client – Shook Kelley (Charlotte office)
Shook Kelley, AIA’s architectural Firm of the Year 2008 in North Carolina, is a self-proclaimed “atypical” design firm headquartered in Charlotte, NC. Shook Kelley has been well recognized for the quality of their architectural and design work during the past 16 years, but they are truly defined by their unique vision in creating design solutions. Over the past sixteen years, Shook Kelley has garnered a national reputation for pioneering a range of services that merge seemingly disparate disciplines such as brand strategy, architecture, consumer anthropology and communication design into one integrated approach called Perception Design. Simply put, they help clients take complex business strategies and turn them into two-second icons that cue and trigger specific emotional values in consumers. Their approach focuses on creating a complete and consistent “Brand Image” for their clients, whether it’s urban design, retail environments, or in this case, a nightclub.
The Situation
In 2008, the Sunset Club engaged Shook Kelley to assist them in re-branding the interior space to be a more contemporary and hip hot spot. The Sunset Club, located in the South End district of Charlotte, has been the area’s premier private cigar, wine, martini and cocktail lounge for over 10 years. Shook Kelley was charged with recreating a stunning nightclub setting that would offer customizable environments to provide something different for everybody, offering a unique “night out” experience for for existing members as well as prospective ones.
The Design Solution
The solution entailed creating an interior environment that would enhance this high-tech venue. Shook Kelley designers had a vision to use custom designed banquettes to not only create flexible intimate seating areas but also to use the fabrics and shapes of the banquettes to amplify the lighting effects.
The challenge for Shook Kelley was finding a manufacturer that could produce custom upholstered banquette seating and correctly capture the radius shapes and custom proportions while completing the work on time - five weeks timeframe - and on budget.
Charles Stewart Contract emerged as the vendor who could provide this design solution. Within one week, Charles Stewart Contract, a custom upscale upholstered furniture manufacturer, had produced a full-size prototype of the custom designed banquettes indicating the radius shape and the seating proportions for the designers to approve. Once approved, Charles Stewart’s frame and pattern engineers set to work to complete the project. With over 20 years of experience creating custom upscale upholstered furniture, this project moved smoothly through production and was ready for opening night.
Results
Charles Stewart Contract completed the project on time and on budget. Shook Kelley designers along with the Sunset Club owners and members gave rave reviews to Charles Stewart for not only providing beautiful and custom designed banquettes, but for their attention to detail and responsiveness throughout the entire renovation process. “We really enjoyed working with Charles Stewart Contract on this project and look forward to working with them again in the future” commented Cicley Sullivan, Project Designer of Shook Kelley.
